Book Reviews Package

The Book Review Package is made up of:

  • A Press Release,

  • Biography,

  • Order Form,

  • Article or Interview,

  • and the First Chapter or a Short Story.

For non-fiction books a Table of Contents will accompany the additional material.   Other beneficial information will be included if available: Existing Reviews, Pictures, Previously Noted Works by author.   The BRP is created exclusively for your book with your input and approval – it is important that you are involved in the marketing of your own work.

Reviewers and editors receive hundreds of proposals every week and do not have time to painstakingly go through each one.  That is why is it important that for the Book Review Package and query regarding you and your book to be simple, yet informative and complete.  Reviewers and editors should be able to quickly see what your book has to offer.  Also, the Press Release is usually just one page, double-spaced, and lets the reader know what the book contains and the benefit of reading it.

The Biography in the BRP is not your typical biography.  Instead of just listing school and employment history, it lets readers know more about you from answers that you have previously answered on a questionnaire that is emailed to you. How long have you been writing? What prompted you to write a book?  What is your favorite place?  What is your favorite food, book, and song? Whom do you prefer as a singer and an actor? Someone just may feel some kind of a connection with you and then want to read what you have written.

An Order Form will be created with an image of the book and a synopsis that is different from what is on the press release.  It also gives another view of the book.  Sometimes a modified version of the back cover is used.  The author can also send it out via email to friends and family.  Epic Book Promotion’s contact information is given so that authors do not have to deal with fulfilling orders.

An Article, Interview, or both will be constructed for submitting to media outlets, such as local newspapers, magazines, radio or newsletters.  An article can offer more extensive information about the book than the press release or the order form, and it can also be used as a way of advertising when ordering information is included.

Once completed, the article may be edited for sending to certain types of media.  For example, suppose a book is about a road trip that two people took throughout the eastern United States over a two-month period covering five states.  The two stayed in various towns and explored the sites and the people.   Since space is limited with print media, everything that happened with the authors cannot be covered in the space allowed.  With that being the case, only the aspects of the authors’ journey which would be of interest to certain audiences would be reported on, with just mention of the other states.  Citizens of Massachusetts would want to read more about the authors’ experience in their state than they would of the experiences in Vermont, and vice versa.  The readers in the authors’ home town of Hartford, Connecticut, would have more interest in the authors themselves than the trip that was taken. The article would need to be edited or written to satisfy certain audiences.

A mock interview can be used to give newspapers or local television stations an idea of what kind of interviewee you would be on their programs.  Questions would be given to you to answer. Of course, any questions that you come up with on your own will be greatly appreciated.

The First Chapter of the Book, or a Short Story, is included in the Book Review Package instead of an entire review copy of the book.  A cover letter states that a free review copy of the book will be sent upon request. (Review copies are provided by the author.)

The first chapter or a short story is sent with the package in lieu of a published copy for a few reasons. First, we are alerted of someone’s interest in your work when a copy of the book is requested. Also, multiple copies of the book and postage can be expensive, and not everyone who receives a copy of the book is going to review it.  With past experience it has been discovered that some of these free review copies have ended up on miscellaneous book-selling websites, or being sent to a distributor for “refunds”.  The distributor in turn wants the “refunded” money returned and contacts the publisher, which, of course, can become a financial fiasco.

For non-fiction books, a Table of Contents will be added to the other material to simply show what your book contains in greater detail.

Any Additional Information that may bring more attention to you and your book will be included in the Book Review Package: pictures, literary awards, reviews that have already obtained, etc.

Everyone has an opinion, and if John Jones, an “Avid Reader”, found your book to be full of “spontaneous action that was anything but dull”, or “reading these pages saved me a lot of time and headaches”, readers and reviewers would take note.
